Alec Bennett's Motorcycles

BSA M24 500cc Gold Star
Illus. 3

BSA M24 500cc Gold Star.
Very rare first model Gold Star circa 1938. Restoration - Interesting Registration Number
Remarkably, although the year of this Beezer somewhat pre-dates my time with Alec Bennett, this picture is right on target. I stripped and cleaned hundreds of 'em! Well, ex-WD models of similar vintage! Incidentally, I cannot imagine why the "interesting"Registration Number is at all interesting? COW numbers were quite normal in the Southampton area at about the time I was employed by Alec Bennett.
In passing; I'd like to mention Atlantic Motor Cycles and apologise to Jim Gleave for borrowing his wonderful pictures of these grand old machines. Hey, I was stuck, man! I had nothing like them in the family album, so it was natural for me to look elsewhere, and where else but Atlantic Motor Cycles...

Of course the number plate might be of interest for reasons I don't understand? Nor much care about, I may add!

Manx Norton 500cc c1958
Illus. 4
Manx Norton 500cc c1958

This bike has returned to England from New Zealand and is in superb condition. Fitted with a Francis Beart modified engine.

It was on machines similar to this that Alec Bennett won the 'Manx Grand Prix' eleven times. And it was a machine similar to this that I struggled with, in order to remove it from the narrow space in the staff car park. (I was a tiny little lad and the top of the fuel tank was about level with my tits, so it was no easy task!)

Norton International, 1948, 500cc
Illus. 5
Norton International, 1948, 500cc Matching No's etc, superb condition, Manx type bolt through tank.

Well, this number is remarkable it parodies my own initials.

This model and many more like it were the bikes that I cleaned and degreased as a 15 year old lad. Frankly it cured my craving for motor-cycles forever!

Velocette Mk VIII c1948 -350cc
Another very familiar machine.

I loved, drooled over and polished these things for a year, before I woke up to myself!
